If you are over 50 and have been out of work for some time you may find it a bit harder to get back into the job market however, if you remain positive and are fit and healthy you may find your perfect niche. There are some companies who prefer to take on a mature individual especially if you have expert experience or are specialists in your field.
Some Tips:-
Try to get up every morning at the same time as you would when you went to work. If your health is good and you wish it to remain that way do some light and regular exercise. If you have high blood pressure or other problems speak to your Dr about it first and ask for guidance. Doing some light exercise everyday will help you stay positive and it will look good on your CV. If you are overweight or obese work with the Dr or other health officials to get fit. It is a known fact that healthy looking people have a more positive outlook and employers do look upon them more favourably. An employer is unlikely to take someone on if he thinks he looks ill or under par he will be worried that he may have to find cover at short notice.
Perhaps there is a particular place you would like to work. Do you know of anybody who is working for that company, perhaps they could give you a reference or point you in the right direction.
Let everybody know you are seeking work. Friends, family and other relations, in
fact everyone you communicate with. There may be someone, somewhere in your network
who knows of the ideal opportunity.
Let them know you are willing to take on training,
are flexible, show enthusiasm.
Think about all the skills you have -
Think about your past positions. Did you reach your full potential? Are there management or other courses you could go on to help you develop further skills. Books you could read even. The library and the internet have many, many resources. Many people are experts in particular topics through their own learning and diligence.
Wear a suit or other smart clothing as you would for a formal interview. Ensure good
hygiene then go out and push yourself to speak to people. If your CV is not up-
Persistence and resilience almost always pay off in the end, so if you are turned
down for a position and it is advertised again a few weeks later then re-
Perhaps your prospective employer plays golf, or is a member of an association or
community programme you are interested in -
Think about people you have worked with in the past. Were you able to quickly build a rapport with everyone or only with particular people. What was it that made those particular people easy to work with? If you keep yourself fit, active and portray yourself as a helpful and enthusiastic worker people will want to work with you.
