In today’s tough economic climate getting your CV noticed may seem like an impossible task. You may have already sent out 100’s of CVs and had very little or no response. There can be various reasons for this. The first most common reason being that your presentation is not up to scratch. Some employers may not even open the envelope if it is incorrectly addressed; or if it does not contain their name. Have a think when you are applying for a position. If you know the name is Mr White, check again and make sure it is not Mr Whyte. A subtle difference in the spelling of the recruiter’s name can make a serious difference to whether or not your CV is taken seriously. Ensure your envelope is addressed to the correct department and that the building, street, town and postcode as well as the county are all correct. It is also good idea to ensure that there are no dirty smudge marks on the envelope.

If the recruiter has a few hundred CVs to sift through he may ask his Secretary or receptionist to downsize the load and only pick out the best. A secretary or receptionist may then scan through the CVs and throw out anything with even the smallest typo or spelling error. Anything that does not look presentable may also be thrown out; as will anything that is too long; anything that is peppered with I’s and most companies (with the exception of graphic designers or those seeking a graphic designer/art designer) will not look at anything that looks like a tri-fold brochure or a booklet.

The Secretary now has a pile of CVs on her desk. It may only be half the size it was, but the recruiter or Director may think it is still too large. The PA/Secretary or Receptionist may then have to go through it again and only pick out the very best. Keep in mind that the PA/Secretary or Receptionist may be juggling a host of other jobs at the same time, may be totally stressed, underpaid and overworked. She may even know a few names of people applying so if you are one of these people that can either work in your favour or against it.
